How to Be a Neighborhood Naturalist

***************************************************************

Hi Panthers! I am going to be posting updates on what is happening in the Monarch Hero Habitats and in the Guacamole Garden until you are back to care for them yourselves!

Here is one of our larva moving to the next stage of its life cycle! I was very lucky to be there just at the moment this monarch caterpillar metamorphosed into a chrysalis!

We are also seeing these fun, fuzzy Giant Leopard moth caterpillars - they eat dandelions so I am very happy to have them here!

I went up to water the plants and airlift any caterpillars who had eaten all the leaves off their plants. This turned out to be impossible as we have a bumper crop of larvae this spring!

They have eaten almost everything down to little nubs. Fortunately there is some native milkweed coming back, and I was able to transplant a few hungry friends!

We are still seeing lots of Gulf fritillary caterpillars on the passion flower too.

The salvia, lantana, and mistflower are coming back splendidly and the button bushes and bee balm are showing signs of life!

The Guacamole Garden is doing well - the jalapeno plants have flowers so peppers won't be far behind. The tomato plants are getting bigger and bigger, so I hope to see flowers there soon as well. The onions look good and the lime tree has new growth - all very promising!
