STEAM Lab 2018-19 Week 19

What a fantastic week! Houston Ballet Dance to Learn in 3rd grade, Da Camera Music Encounters in 4th grade, and HMNS Bugs on Wheels for 4th!

In the STEAM Lab it was another week of successful problem solving and collaboration with Osmo, Code.org and Scratch. 1st grade Monarch Heroes also got in some seed starting for spring, K-2 Name That Book club started their read-aloud visits to classes and filming each other’s book reviews, and 3rd-5th finished painting the new trash cans for the campus.
That’s not too bad for a 3-day week (The district was closed Monday to celebrate the remarkable life and achievements of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and I was out Wednesday to conduct trainings). I am really looking forward to what students will accomplish next week in 4 days! I will be out one day to take our campus Spelling Bee champion and alternate to the district Bee – best of luck, Justin!

STEAM Lab 2018-19 Week 18

So many exciting learning adventures going on at Piney Point this week! HMNS has been on site most of the week with their Bugs on Wheels program, Mr. Briceno and Ms. Mallona’s G/T class started their Dance to Learn workshop with Houston Ballet, K-2 got acquainted with OSMO Math, Tangrams, Newton, and Masterpiece, and another 5th grade started their 50 states Makey Makey/ Scratch projects.

We kicked off the week with one of our K-2 Name That Book Super Readers from Ms. Thormodsgaard’s 1st grade treating our administration team to a story time. The K-2 team is doing splendidly and will be ready to make us Panther Proud next month at the contest!

Our No Place For Hate student coalition met for the mid-year campus climate assessment and identified some ongoing issues then worked in small groups on solution proposals. They did some really fantastic work and a now heading up subcommittees to implement their ideas. We are so proud of these campus leaders!

The campus community has really been supporting our Green Heroes. Ms. Molina asked us to decorate all the campus trash cans and donated the old ones to the Monarch Heroes. Also, lots of sheets and bedding were donated to protect the habitats from the threatened freeze! Mr. Huerta wants to collaborate with the recycling team on a new unit in the Art Studio, so stay tuned for gorgeous new reused material creations coming from that direction as well.

STEAM Lab 2018-19 Week 17

Welcome back to the lab! It was a short week due to testing, but fantastic student collaboration and problem solving in Code.org, the building centers, OSMO Newton, Math, and Tangrams, and design made for a wonderful start to 2019!

Ms. Leal’s Monarch Heroes reused cardboard boxes and their milk cartons to start seeds for the spring planting. They also had two students complete the Code.org Course B! Congratulations to Mikela and Keyla!
The Earth Day design contests were introduced in Kinder and 2nd grade, and 5th grade started work on their Makey Makey 50 states project. We also had a Free Build Day! I have finished the G/T testing for the 2018-19 school year, so my lab is officially back open for STEAM!
